Home About Us Fundraising Autism Giant Steps Pathways |
Won't you join in helping to bring an opportunity for independent living to children who have autism.Living a life with an autistic child is extremely challenging. In an attempt to raise awareness and much needed funds to assist is giving Carlos an opportunity for independent living, we have undertaken various fund raising ventures. In 2008, Kevin decided that he would compete in a triathlon. Not content with a short distance event, he entered the Australian National Long Course Championships. After 8 weeks training he completed the 2km swim, 83km bike ride and 20km run in 5 hours and 45 minutes. More importantly, the generosity of family, friends and colleagues meant over $11,000 was raised. more Due to the recent increase in shark incidents and sightings in and around Sydney Harbour the organisers have decided to cancel the swim leg of this year’s Manly Wharf Bridge to Beach, amid fears the water could be too bitey. Unlike most ocean swims the event is over 11km of Sydney Harbour in sections where large 3m+ sharks have been spotted in the last fortnight. The organisers were unable to implement adequate preventative measures over this sort of distance and therefore have taken the difficult decision of cancelling the swim for this year. Whilst the risks of getting bitten by a shark are very low, they are still there and given the amount of attention they've been getting I am both relieved and disappointed. I therefore have to change my plans in order to complete my swim for autism. Since I am now going solo, the best way to complete a marathon swim will be to move to a swimming pool. Instead of completing 11km, I've decided to see how far I can swim in 5 hours at the Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool on Sunday 15th March. The swim will be 7am to 12 noon. Kevin managed to complete a total of 16km in 4 hours and 58 minutes. Hard going and his shoulders were sore. Support from family and friends got him through to the end. To see a short video of the swim, click on this link. Training started on the 28th December with the purchase of a 30 visit pass and a 1500m swim at the Victoria Park Pool. My first swim since competing in the triathlon in February 2008. To test out the harbour water Kevin also entered the Sydney Harbour Swim Classic on the 1st March. The classic is a 2km swim starting and finishing at the Man o' War Steps by the Sydney Opera House which he completed with ease in 26 minutes.Funds raised will go
directly towards enhancing the lives of children with autism. All
